Dayton, July 2010 — Shopping for replacement ink and toner cartridges can be an “eye opening” experience. Consumers quickly realize that the cost of purchasing a printer is minimal when compared to the cost of operating that printer, particularly the high cost of buying replacement ink and toner cartridges. It is not uncommon to find that the cost of replacing each of the four color toner cartridges in some of today’s most popular color laser printers will cost more than the price paid to purchase the printer. The purpose of this article isn’t to support or defend the cost the manufacturers charge for these consumables, rather to raise consumer awareness and to inform them about alternative replacement cartridge options.

The printer manufacturers claim that the retail cost of replacement cartridges is not “high” at all, rather “fair”. They back up these claims by stating the costs reflect the billions of dollars spent on the research and development of the science behind the ink and cartridge technologies. The reality is that the “printer consumables” product lines, which includes replacement ink and toner cartridges, are some of the most profitable product lines for printer manufacturers. The cost of printer consumables (ink and toner) has risen due to a very high consumer demand for these cartridges.

Facts Every Consumer Should Know About Ink and Toner Cartridges
Fact #1: Using Remanufactured Ink and Toner Cartridges Will Save Consumers Money
“Remanufactured” and “New Compatible” replacement ink and toner cartridges can be used by consumers instead of using “Brand New” OEM (original equipment manufacturer) cartridges.

* Remanufactured cartridges from reputable suppliers typically consist of a “re-conditioned” cartridge that has been given new parts (wipers, blades, drum, toner, ink, etc). These cartridges are subjected to quality control testing, performance testing, and then sealed and packaged for sale.
* “New Compatible” cartridges are actually manufactured new cartridges and not re-conditioned cartridges. They are considered “generic” versions of their respective OEM cartridges.

Remanufactured and new compatible ink and toner cartridges cost much less than their OEM counterparts. Most reputable vendors of these cartridges offer them at discounts of 50% – 80% less than the new OEM cartridge would cost.“Our customers typically save 50% or more when they buy remanufactured cartridges from us instead of visiting their local office supply store.” states Anthony Allen, President of PrinterExperts.com, a Dayton, Ohio based internet retailer that sells remanufactured and compatible ink and toner cartridges. “We have one customer that operates 48 auto parts stores across Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio that started buying remanufactured toner cartridges from us, which resulted in annual savings of $36,000.”

Consumers who replace ink and toner cartridges just once or twice annually can save hundreds of dollars, while consumers who replace their cartridges more frequently can realize annual savings in the thousands of dollars.

Fact #2: Using Remanufactured Ink and Toner Cartridges Does NOT Impact the Warranty of the Printer

Consumers are often misinformed and led to believe that using remanufactured or compatible cartridges in their printer will void their printer’s warranty. This is completely false. Ink and toner cartridges are “user replaceable” parts and consumers have the right, under US Federal Trade Commission Law, to use non-oem or non-branded parts when replacing them. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act is a United States of America Federal Law that states “Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts be used with the product in order to retain the warranty.” Enacted in 1975, it is the federal statute that governs warranties on consumer products.

Consumers are encouraged to research this law and get a better understanding of their rights as consumers.

Fact #3: Remanufactured Ink and Toner Cartridges Perform “As Well As” New OEM Branded Cartridges

The ink and toner “aftermarket” is made up of many companies selling remanufactured and compatible printer consumables, mainly ink and toner cartridges. To put it in perspective, a recent study valued the global toner cartridge and toner supply industry at $40 billion annually. Aftermarket toner cartridges and toner supplies make up 25% of the market or $10 billion annually.

The reason behind this growing figure is simple. The $10 billion “Aftermarket” toner cartridge and supplies market exists because these products work and offer consumers lower cost alternatives to buying new oem branded supplies.

Consumers considering the purchase of aftermarket toner products should seek out a reputable vendor. Reputable vendors of these products typically offer 100% satisfaction guarantees on their products that will allow consumers to return the products if they are not satisfied with the performance of the supplies. Business accreditations, such as Better Business Bureau, and other company accolades should also be investigated when trying to determine a company’s ability to supply quality products and services.

Remanufactured ink and toner cartridges purchased from reputable vendors and suppliers are going to work in the printers they were designed for. Print quality, color quality, and page yields should be equal to that of the oem version of the cartridge or product.

In conclusion, consumers are encouraged to increase their own knowledge of the facts stated above as the printer manufacturers don’t promote this type of information. Understanding the information in this article and your rights as a consumer will lead to making better purchasing decisions and hopefully save you a few bucks during the process.

Print-Rite introduced the Pivotal cartridges in World Expo 2010. The Pivotal line represents the state of the art of remanufactured cartridges. They consistently perform as well as any other top line toner cartridges and provide consumers with an attractive price discount.
Las Vegas, NV July 14, 2010 — Today, Print-Rite, the world leader in digital imaging supplies, unveiled its Pivotal line of premium remanufactured toner cartridges at World Expo 2010, hosted by Recharger Magazine at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on July 14 and 15 in Las Vegas, NV. Print-Rite introduced the printer cartridges in the Pivotal exclusive booth, where throughout the show it is running side-by-side print comparisons of the Pivotal cartridges with premium toner cartridges of a number of other well-known brands.

Pivotal represents the top of the line in Print-Rite’s toner cartridges. Products at this top level of quality have been in high demand by Print Rite’s most demanding customers. Additionally, more enquiries for top quality toner cartridges were received in the last six months, notably from companies offering managed print services, which drove Print Rite’s decision to introduce these products as a separate and distinct line of products.

The Pivotal line represents the state of the art of remanufactured cartridges and Print-Rite has leveraged its extensive expertise to produce these premium cartridges. A dedicated team of veteran product developers reverse-engineers each cartridge in the Pivotal line. Using tools and techniques designed to assure superior performance, the cartridges are then remanufactured by a specially-trained team at Print-Rite’s technically-advanced, 1.2-million-square-foot, vertically-integrated manufacturing facility.

At World Expo, printers equipped with Pivotal cartridges generate print samples in Print-Rite’s booth along side machines using toner cartridges from a number of other well-known brands. “When it comes to premium quality, seeing is believing,” says Mr. Ho. “There is just no disputing the superior performance of the Pivotal cartridges,” he says. “And regardless if they come in the morning, or in the afternoon, or the next day, visitors to our booth will see the same great performance–sheet after sheet and cartridge after cartridge. More important, that’s what end users will experience too.”

Each Pivotal cartridge is made from an ultrasonically-cleaned virgin core and refilled with customized toner that has been matched to a proprietary OPC drum. The drum-toner combination ensures precise color matching and area fills with the highest optical density. Pivotal cartridges feature other proprietary components such as doctor blades that eliminate streaking and wiper blades that will not flip when cleaning.

Quality control is key to ensuring each Pivotal ink cartridge delivers consistent, superior performance. Individual components are tested and certified before they are included in the remanufacturing process. Finished cartridges are then tested using protocols that establish high-quality baselines for both horizontal and vertical print jobs. Additional testing of characteristics such as print quality and color consistency as well as optical density and edge acuity guarantees all match those of the best cartridge in the market. Tests are performed under various environmental conditions including high- and low-humidity. Pivotal cartridges also undergo page-yield testing that complies with established ISO standards.

The strict product safety management system at Print-Rite Unicorn warrants each Pivotal cartridge is safe to use and environmentally friendly. Print-Rite Unicorn is the world’s first printer cartridge factory accredited the IECQ QC080000 certification for Hazardous Substance Process Management, which provides a framework for the responsible control and management of hazardous substances. The cartridge is compliant with the EU’s REACH and RoHS initiatives regulating the use of hazardous materials, and also satisfies the requirements of the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.

Although Pivotal cartridges are premium products, they do not carry a premium price tag. Pricing for the new line will be competitive with other premium products currently on the market. Pivotal cartridges for popular Hewlett-Packard color and monochrome laser machines will begin shipping in the third quarter of this year. Cartridges for equipment from other OEMs are expected by the end of the year. Print Rite is currently taking orders.

According to printer manufacturers, the path to going green and printing cheap starts at the product design stage. For instance, these hardware makers say they observe a conscious effort to produce printers that require fewer resources, namely, electricity, supplies and media.Lim Kok Hin, Canon Singapore’s senior director and general manager of domestic business imaging solutions and business solutions division, said multifunction devices (MFD), for example, are designed to allow businesses to consume less energy.”With the rising cost of energy, this quickly translates into tremendous savings for companies,” Lim told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail. Kasai Yasuhiro, Epson’s director of regional product management division, said its printing products were designed with “stringent energy and resource consumption targets, in relation to performance”.Older models are also replaced with new designs that make better use of resource. The vendor’s Stylus C110 business inkjet printer, for example, consumes 60 percent less energy than its predecessor Epson Stylus 87+, Kasai told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail.Its business laser printers, from standby or sleep mode, can complete printing the first page in 8 seconds. This minimizes the time the machine needs to be powered for print jobs, thus, reducing energy consumption, he said. “This is especially important as most print jobs are typically short runs comprising two to five pages,” he said.Ivy Liang, Asia-Pacific and Japan vice president of marketing at HP’s imaging and printing group, said the company’s “Instant-on Technology” is embedded in most of its LaserJet printers, enabling the machines to print the first page in 7.5 seconds from sleep mode.According to Canon’s Lim, companies tend to focus on larger business processes in their bid to achieve cost savings, leaving office printing costs unmanaged. Most are unaware how much their organizations are spending on their printing needs, he said.”Unmanaged print costs comprise 1 percent to 3 percent of a company’s revenue,” he noted, citing numbers from a February 2008 Gartner report. “Most organizations can experience significant cost savings with proper management of print processes.”

Duplex printing saves cost
Double-sided, or duplex printing is an effective component of a properly managed print policy, Lim said. Referring to the Gartner study, he said organizations can potentially reduce annual paper costs by at least 30 percent across their output by printing on both sides as part of the standard work process.Kasai noted that before an organization can enjoy such cost savings, all printers deployed in a company must support duplex capability and there must be a policy enforcing the use of duplex printing. “In some companies, this policy is forcibly imposed by IT administrators who set their printers to print duplex by default,” he said.

For HP, duplex printing helped the IT vendor cut its paper use by 25 percent during a pilot test, Liang said. The company is further tweaking its printing infrastructure to achieve the best cost savings, and expects to reduce its paper consumption by 800 tons annually when it has completed this initiative, she added. However, Graeme Philipson, research director at Connected Research, noted that while duplex printing may have its place in some circumstances, it may often be inappropriate in others. He added that it may even add to printing costs and the organization’s carbon footprint. In an e-mail interview, Philipson said studies have shown paper consumption represents only about 10 percent of total print costs. “That means duplex printing is addressing only 10 percent of the problem,” he said.He added that printers that support duplex printing also cost more, which may negate the cost advantage over the lifespan of the printer. Since their mechanisms are more complex, they are more likely to fail and need added maintenance that could be more expensive, said Philipson.

Reuse and recycle
Another avenue to save costs is through recycling, a practice that major printer vendors are advocating through their green programs.

Epson, for example, runs collection and recycling programs in 25 markets including Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Canon also has in place a global recycling program for used toner cartridges. In Singapore, for example, the company has four recycling locations for customers to drop off their used cartridges. Alternatively, businesses can arrange for used toner cartridges to be collected from their offices, provided they have at least 10 printer cartridges.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.-The worldwide hardcopy peripherals market grew 3.6% year over year with 34 million units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2009 (4Q09), according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker. Driven by the continued popularity of multifunction printers (MFPs), this represents the first year-over-year gain in the market since the second quarter of 2008. Although shipment values declined 4.6% year over year to $14.3 billion in 4Q09, this was the slowest rate of decline since 3Q08. “We believe the fourth quarter will be the start of the market recovery. While this is a positive sign, the market is expected to recover slowly throughout 2010,” said Phuong Hang, program manager, Worldwide Hardcopy Peripheral Trackers.

HP – HP continues to be an irrefutable leader in the overall hardcopy market in 2009, despite losing nearly 3 points in market share to 40.8% from 43.5% in 2008. The fourth quarter was HP’s best performing quarter in 2009, with 5.6% year-over-year growth in unit shipments. The EMEA region was HP’s strongest in terms of unit growth in Q409, with 11% year-over-year growth, compared to 3% and 2% growth in the Americas and APeJ, respectively. In the worldwide MFP market, HP grew 12% and was able to pick up two points in market share compared to a year ago while maintaining its leadership position. Compared to a year ago, HP’s printer segment experienced market share declines in 4Q09 on a worldwide basis. The vendor’s worldwide printer share dropped one point to 39% as unit shipments declined 5% in 4Q09 compared to 4Q08. As held true for other vendors, HP’s MFP shipments faired better than those in the printer segment.

Canon – Despite the challenging economy, Canon finished 2009 strong, with 0.6% growth in the overall hardcopy market compared to 2008. As the number 2 vendor, Canon wasted no time in closing the gap between its position and HP’s by gaining more than 2 points in market share, to 19.0% in 2009 from 16.6% in 2008. Among the top 5 vendors, Canon was the best performer in the Americas and APeJ in 2009 and the only vendor to achieve positive year-over-year trends in these regions with 6% and 11% growth, respectively. During the last quarter of 2009, Canon recorded an 8% year-over-year gain in the overall hardcopy market, shipping 6.6 million units versus 6.1 million in 4Q08. Once again, the Americas (14%) and APeJ (21%) were Canon’s best performing regions in 4Q09 while EMEA suffered a decline of 8%. Between MFPs and Printers, Canon’s MFPs achieved the higher year-over-year growth – 16% compared to –2% – in

the worldwide market in 4Q09.

Epson – Third place vendor Epson posted an increase of 1.1% in market share in 2009, from 13.8% in 2008. As with most vendors in the top 5, 4Q09 was the only quarter in 2009 where Epson’s year-over-year growth, in terms of unit shipments in total hardcopy peripherals, resulted in a positive trend (8.4%). The APeJ region was the top performer in terms of year-over-year shipment growth at 16% in 4Q09, followed by the Americas (4%) and EMEA (3%). Epson maintained its number 3 position in both MFP and printer shipment share, as its worldwide MFP and printer shipments grew 8% and 10% respectively. In 4Q09, Epson was able to maintain its shipment share in MFPs and grow its shipment share in printers by one point.

Brother – Hanging on to its number 4 position, Brother experienced a double-digit decline (–11.7%) in unit shipments in 2009 to 6.4 million from 7.3 million in 2008 in the overall hardcopy market. Despite suffering a setback, the vendor managed to maintain its global share of 5.7% in 2009. Compared to other top 4 vendors, Brother’s 2009 year-over-year performance was average in APeJ (–1%) and the Americas (–10%), and was next to last in EMEA (–18%). Except for 1Q09, Brother continued its negative year-over-year trend throughout 2009, posting growth of –14.7% in 4Q09, making it the worst performer in the top 5 in the last quarter of 2009. In terms of regional growth, Brother recorded 0% year-over-year growth in APeJ, –1% in the Americas, and –35% in EMEA in 4Q09.

Samsung – Making the top 5 list for the second consecutive quarter, Samsung has been relentless in its mission to grab more share in the hardcopy market. Given the difficult economic conditions, Samsung posted a 4.8% market share in 2009, gaining 0.5 points from 2008. Compared to 2008, the vendor was the second best performer in 2009 in terms of year-over-year growth, with –2.2% growth compared to Canon’s +0.6%. While achieving the best year-over-year trend (+5%) in EMEA in 2009, Samsung’s results in APeJ (–6%) and the Americas (–15%) were below average when measured against other vendors in the top 5. Compared to the previous three quarters, 4Q09 was, by far, Samsung’s best performing quarter, with 31.3% year-over-year growth from 4Q08, the best performance among the top 5 vendors. Although its year-over-year growth of 7% was second best in the Americas (after Canon’s +14%), Samsung outperformed the other top vendors in EMEA and APeJ in 4Q09, with year-over-year growth of 39% and 35%, respectively.

Whenever you buy a printer for your computer, you are making a commitment to that particular company. This is because each printer manufacturer will design their own printer ink cartridges, crafting them in such a way that only their design will fit into the slots provided. Therefore, if you buy an HP printer, you will not be able to put Lexmark ink cartridges into that printer. This is something that you need to pay attention to when you first start to look for a printer. The initial cost of the printer may be low, enticing you to buy that particular printer. However, each of the printer ink cartridges may be more highly priced, thereby forcing you to spend more money every time that you go to buy a new printer ink cartridge.

You may end up saving more money by choosing a printer which is more expensive at the on-set but will offer cheaper printer ink cartridges in the end. Consider how often you are going to be printing before you actually make a purchase. Keep in mind that printer ink cartridges will dry up as well over time, which means that you are going to have to buy new printer ink cartridges periodically if you only print occasionally. The printer ink cartridges themselves are going to be a key factor when you set out to buy the best possible printer that you can find.

It is important for us to understand and acknowledge that the more carelessly we use natural resources, the faster we are going to run into serious and irreversible environmental problems. With our wanton use and abuse of nature’s resources, it’s no surprise that we are already facing an environmental crisis; it is critical at this time that we all need to take care about watching our consumption levels. The trick is to find a way to reduce the amount of resources we use without altering our lifestyles in a major way. One of the ways that we can do this is by looking for recycled printer ink cartridges instead of buying new printer ink cartridges anytime that we go shopping for new computer accessories.

These recycled printer ink cartridges are built by recycling parts from old printer ink cartridges. The plastics that were originally used to form the first printer ink cartridge are melted down and remolded into a new printer ink cartridge shape. Up to 70% of a recycled printer ink cartridge will be made from previously used materials, which can be one small way that we can start making a difference. Once more people start turning to recycled printer ink cartridges, this area alone can start having a major impact into helping to reduce, reuse, and recycle all of the natural resources that we, as a culture, uses. We’ll still have all of our normal printing ability but the printer ink cartridges themselves will be helping us to make one small but significant impact on the world.

We all know how annoying it is when we are told by the system that our printer ink cartridges are empty. It is not only annoying but is expensive too, to buy new printer ink cartridges frequently. However, there seems to be a little secret which the printer ink cartridge companies don’t want us to know.

It is possible to not only harness remaining ink in the cartridge before throwing, but we can get almost half of the cartridge! All one would need to do is reset the printer ink cartridge using a pin. One would need to locate a hole above the circuit at the back of the cartridge and reset it easily. This would allow you to use the ink that you would otherwise have thrown in to the dustbin.

However, before you throw the printer ink cartridge away, do try this trick just in case it helps! This would not only save us from spending more on printer ink, but would also give us the pleasure of doing something that big corporations do not want us to do.

Compatible Ink Cartridges & Compatible Toner Cartridges

1. If you have tried to save money at all in your office environment, no doubt have you come across the compatible ink cartridges and compatible toner cartridges, and probably even the refills. Compatible ink and toner cartridges can be a great way to save money over the expensive Genuine OEM printer cartridges that printer manufacturer’s offer. Generally compatible or remanufactured cartridges can save you 50% or more compared to the OEM printer cartridges. It is important though to not always look for the best deal when buying generic cartridges. Many people who purchase the cheapest printer ink cartridges possible on sites such as Ebay, have problems with the printer ink cartridges not performing like they should, with toner lines through the pages or ink not printing correctly on the pages. The best way to save money is by finding a reputable reseller of compatible and or remanufactured cartridges and pay just a little bit for the quality assurance.

2. Recycle paper that has only been printed on one side

The next way to save money in your office is to use your own method of recycling paper. Depending on the office type, you could either print a lot of pages that are used for internal use only, for a short period of time, or you could print paper and have it used for clients use. For the first case, many companies will just print on one side of the page, and then throw the paper away. The best way to save money is to start a pile that has all of the printed sides of paper facing down, and then once you have a decent size stack left, insert them into your printer, so that the other side of the page can then be printed on. If used effectively, this method could essential cut your paper usage in half.

3. Turn off computers or put in Stand-By mode when you leave for the day

The next way to save money at the office is to simply turn off your computer or put it into stand-by mode at the end of the day. This can be a simple habit to get into and can save the company money on utility costs since less power will be used. Turning off the monitor is a good start, but by turning the computer off, or by putting it in stand-by mode will save even more electricity.

4. Replace your old printer

The next tip is to analyze how often you use your printer, and to examine the cost the consumables, such as printer ink and toner cartridges. One example could be that if you are using an inkjet printer, most of the cartridges will only print between a few hundred pages before needing to be replaced. If your office does much printing at all, you should consider upgrading to a laser printer. Printers such as the HP Laserjet 10150 use the HP Q2612A toner cartridge which an OEM cartridge from HP would cost about $69. Doing some simply math and we find out that with the compatible HP Q2612A toner cartridge, the price per page is only $0.01, where the ink cartridge price per page is about $0.06. So in this case, the inkjet cartridge price is almost 6 times more expensive then the laser printer with a toner cartridge.

5. Buy office supplies in bulk

The final tip is to consider purchasing office supplies in bulk. Generally purchasing anything in bulk will always save money. Consider purchasing paper, toner cartridges, ink pens, sticky note pads, and even computer systems in bulk to save additional money.

After utilizing some or all of these 5 ways to save money at the office, you should be well on your way to doing your part to help the company out. Make sure to let the boss know if your achievements as well, hey maybe you will get a raise.

The battle between OEM original cartridges and remanufactured cartridges is real! Major printer and cartridge manufactures have steadily felt a decrease in their market-share for printer ink cartridges. The open battle is against generic ink makers, whose cheaper ink has become more popular due to a faltering economy. Another reason they have been hit hard has been a trend began by businesses and consumers to print less as a way to save money.

To illustrate this battle let us take HP printer ink for example that on Wednesday shared their financial news. Their printer and ink division has been severely wounded, with sales falling 19 percent to $6 billion. That includes a 7 percent decline in supplies, a typically strong area that includes things like printer ink cartridges, which are among HP biggest moneymakers.

Thus showing us the battle is being won due to several factors. One, consumers find the prices for OEM cartridges substantially higher than cheaper generic or remanufactured cartridges. Two, with more technological capability to store and share documentation and information the need to print has become less. Three, there a definite increase of online retailers and stores providing a comparison stand point thus giving the consumers the tools to shop smart
